Why the Lucky 15 is the "Saturday Special"

Walk into any betting shop on a Saturday morning, and you'll hear punters asking for a "Lucky 15." It is the undisputed king of multiple bets for one simple reason: The Bonuses.

Unlike a simple accumulator where one loser kills the whole bet, a Lucky 15 keeps you alive. Even better, most bookies offer massive incentives that this calculator takes into account.

How does a Lucky 15 work?

You pick 4 Horses. The bet consists of 15 separate bets:

  • 4 Singles (If only one wins, you get paid)
  • 6 Doubles (Any 2 winning combinations)
  • 4 Trebles (Any 3 winning combinations)
  • 1 Four-Fold (All 4 win)

Note: Because there are 15 bets, a £1 Lucky 15 costs £15 total.

Honest John's Strategy: Don't Waste the Bonus!

The "Double Odds for One Winner" bonus is the secret weapon of this bet.

The Mistake: Putting four short-priced favorites (e.g., 1/2, Evens) in a Lucky 15. If only one wins at Evens, double odds only gets you 2/1. You still lose money on the total stake.

The Honest John Way: Use Lucky 15s for value horses (4/1 or bigger). If you back a 5/1 shot and it's the only winner, the "Double Odds" bonus pays you out at 10/1. Often, that single winner covers the cost of the entire bet!

Lucky 15 vs. Yankee

A Yankee is 11 bets (same selections but NO singles). If you play a Yankee and only one horse wins, you get zero back. If you play a Lucky 15 and one horse wins, you get paid (usually double). For the extra cost of 4 unit stakes, the insurance is almost always worth it.
